Nojoom is a Yemeni girl born into a traditional rural family. When her older sister is raped, the family is forced to abandon its land and go to the capital, Saana, for a question of honour. Without understanding anything Nojoom is forced to marry at the age of 10 and goes, with her 30-year-old husband to another tribe. Her father needs his daughter’s dowry money to pay the rent. Frightened and refusing to accept the sexual violence and heavy work, she flees and seeks help in the courts, filing for divorce.
Khadija Al-Salami
Born in Yemen. She directed around 25 documentaries for different TV channels. With Charles Hoots she wrote the book The Tears of Sheba, about her experience of growing up in Yemen, where she was forced to marry at the age of 11.
