The young Shawnouk kills a man during a robbery and flees into the forest, determined to return to Atikamekw village, where he was born. The return is marked by a series of purification rituals. The fire, the ancient trees, and the music of his ancestors will help Shawnouk face his greatest challenge: the conflict within himself. With a cast composed of non-professional actors who live and work in the villages where the film was shot, the film is a true commentary on the appalling conditions in which indigenous communities outside of Quebec live.
