On the 17th century, Federico Mai arrives at a monastery with a mission: his brother committed suicide and cannot be buried in consecrated ground unless his lover, Sister Benedetta, confesses to their sin, thereby saving the dead man's soul. Benedetta is subjected to trials and questioning by the apostolic hierarchy — whilst Federico watches. In the present day, a Russian wants to buy the monastery where Benedetta's torture occurred. Marco Bellocchio
Nasceu em 1939, em Piacenza, Itália. Largou os estudos de filosofia em Milão para trabalhar com cinema e, em 1965, fez seu primeiro filme, De punhos cerrados, premiado em Veneza e Locarno. Seguiram-se obras como A China está perto (1967), Em nome do pai (1971), Henrique IV (1984), Diabo no corpo (1986) e A condenação (1991). Entre seus filmes mais recentes, estão A hora da religião (2002), Bom dia, noite (2003) e Vincere (2009).
