In the Summer of 1944 Hitler decreed: Paris must not, under any circumstance, fall into enemy hands, or if it does, then only as a field of rubble with all its important buildings and monuments destroyed. The person assigned to carry out this barbaric act, General Dietrich von Choltitz, had mines planted all over the city. Nothing should be left as a reminder of the city’s former glory. However, at dawn on 25 August, Swedish Consul General Raoul Nordling takes the city and tries to persuade Choltitz to abandon his plan. Based on the eponymous play by Cyril Gely. Por O tambor, recebeu a Palma de Ouro em Cannes 1979 e o Oscar de melhor filme estrangeiro. Dirigiu ainda O guardião da floresta (Veneza, 1996), The Legend of Rita (Urso de Prata de melhor atriz em Berlim 2000),The Ninth Day (Locarno, 2004), Ulzhan (Cannes 2007), entre outros.
