​After Portland slacker John Callahan nearly loses his life in a car accident, the last thing he intends to do is give up drinking. But when he reluctantly enters treatment — with encouragement from his girlfriend and a charismatic sponsor — Callahan discovers a gift for drawing edgy, irreverent newspaper cartoons that develop an international following and grant him a new lease on life. Gus Van Sant

​Born in the US, in 1952. His directorial debut was Mala Noche (1986). Among his films are Drugstore Cowboy (1989), My Own Private Idaho (1991), Good Will Hunting, Oscar winner for screenplay and supporting sctor, and Milk (2008), which won Oscars for actor and screenplay. For Elephant (2003), he was awarded withthe Palme d’Or at Cannes. In 2012, he directed Restless, which was shown at the Un Certain Regard at Cannes.​
