Investigated by Commissary Lohman of the Berlin Police, Dr. Mabuse, the notorious criminal mastermind, now an inmate at a psychiatric institution, is the main suspect in a series of forgeries. From his cell, he writes his “crime bible” and mentally dominates the doctor who is treating him. With the help of his band of criminals, Mabuse intends to regain his hold on the underworld. This film was banned in nazi Germany by Joseph Goebbels, charged with risking public order. A restored print of Fritz Lang’s classic.

Fritz Lang

Born in Austria, in 1890. His directorial debut was 1919’s Halbblut. After only a short while, he became one of the greatest names of German expressionism, on the strength of masterpieces such as Metropolis (1927) and M (1931). With the rise of nazism in Germany, he flees to the US, where he films classics such as Fury (1936). In the late 1950s he returns to Europe, where he directs his last film, The Thousand Eyes of Dr. Mabuse (1960).
