Nasceu na Inglaterra, em 1942, e faleceu em 1994. Dirigiu 11 longas e mais de 30 curtas-metragens. Ficou conhecido por seus filmes, peças e ativismo pelos direitos humanos e dos homossexuais. Por Caravaggio (1986), recebeu o Urso de Prata no Festival de Berlim. Em sua filmografia, destacam-se ainda Crepúsculo do caos (Prêmio Teddy em Berlim 1987), Blue (menção honrosa no Festival de Estocolmo 1993) e Wittgenstein (Prêmio Teddy em Berlim 1993).
