The fictional tale of Cecil Gaines, a young African American from the South of the US who, in 1957, netted a job as a butler in the White House, a position he occupied until his retirement in 1986. Cecil was a backstage witness to all the power plays involving presidents such as John Kennedy, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. His position also brought him domestic problems with wife Gloria and son Louis, a young man involved with antiestablishment movements. This film marks director Lee Daniels’ return to themes of racial and social equality after the success of Precious.

Lee Daniels

Born in Philadelphia, in 1959. Precious, his second feature film, earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Director, and won the Supporting Actress and Adapted Screenplay categories. The film also won the top award at Sundance. As a producer, he was involved in the making of Monster’s Ball (2001) and The Woodsman (2004). The Paperboy (2012) ill also be shown at the Festival this year.
