In 1929 Friedrich Ritter, a German doctor obsessed with Nietzsche, fled to one of the Galapagos Islands with his lover, to live far from the rules of society. Soon after, they were followed by other immigrants like the Wittmer family and the eccentric Baroness Eloise Von Wagner. The Baroness and her lover disappeared without a trace a few months later. The film uses archive images, interviews and letters (read by actors such as Cate Blanchett and Diane Kruger), to try to solve the mystery and tell the story of a group of people in search of a utopian paradise.
