The struggle to keep Ross Sea the only sea free of fishing is at the heart of this documentary. Ecologist David Ainley has researched the area for over 30 years, cataloguing its ecosystem’s richness and describing it as a “living laboratory”. If until a little while ago Ross Sea was able to keep up its delicate natural balance on its own, it is now getting a lot of attention. The target? The black hake, a delicacy in restaurants all around the world, the fishery of which endangers the Sea’s ecosystem. The Last Ocean is the result of six years of research, filming and activism.
Peter Young
Born in New Zealand. He spent ten years working on the ocean before turning to cinema. He founded Fishey Films production company in 1997. He has been working as a freelance director ever since. His name can be found on several television documentaries on environmental subjects such as the Blue Planet Series (BBC), The Giant Squid (Discovery) and Explorers (TVNZ).
