Timbuktu is steeped in silence thanks to the religious extremists who dominate the region. There is no music, football or laughter in the now deserted streets. Away from it all, in the dunes, Kidane leads a quiet life with his wife, his daughter and his flock. But their peace is threatened when he gets into conflict with Amadou, the fisherman who attacked one of his cows. Abderrahmane Sissako
Nasceu em 1961 na Mauritânia. Criado no Mali, estudou cinema na VGIK, em Moscou. Seu filme de formatura, The Game (1989), foi exibido na Semana da Crítica em Cannes 1991. Na sequência, dirigiu Life on Earth (1998) e Esperando a felicidade, vencedor do prêmio FIPRESCI em Cannes 2002. Sissako se destaca como um dos cineastas mais importantes de seu continente. Bamako, seu penúltimo filme, foi exibido fora de competição em Cannes 2006.
