Festival do Rio is greatly saddened by the death and loss of Eduardo Coutinho, one of Brazil's finest documentary filmmakers, and a familiar figure at the festival.

In 2011 his documentary, As Canções (The Songs), a film that followed the simple premise of getting people to sing and talk about the songs that have influenced their lives, won both the jury and audience prize as the best documentary in Première Brasil.

In 1984, Cabra Marcado para Morrer (Twenty Years), considered to be one of his greatest works, won the Tucano de Ouro for best film at the first FestRio, and the following year won the FIPRESCI prize in Berlin. Last June he was invited to become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
