Beginning in Cannes, Films from Rio is helping to bring seven new projects in development and their producers to three key international industry events to give them market visibility and help find the right international partners. Cannes and the Marché du Film was the first stop for the initial slate of projects from Films from Rio. After further work there will then be additional opportunities to discuss these projects during the next RioMarket at Festival do Rio and at Ventana Sur in Buenos Aires (December 2014).

Films from Riois the result of a unique joint venture for the Brazilian film industry that sees some of Rio de Janeiro’s major cultural, industry and training agencies working together in partnership. The partners include RioFilme, Rio de Janeiro State’s Secretariat of Culture, FIRJAN (Federation of Rio de Janeiro Industries), SEBRAE (Brazilian Agency for Entrepreneurship), Festival do Rio/RioMarket and the Rio Film Commission. Overall responsibility for coordinating Films from Rio is with the Rio de Janeiro Producers’ Union, SICAV (Sindicato Interestadual da Indústria Audiovisual).

“Films from Rio in an initiative that gives us an early chance to introduce some of the most exciting and up-and-coming Rio based film projects, producers and directors directly to the international market, and possible international partners,” explains Sérgio Sá Leitão, the city of Rio’s Secretary of Culture and President of RioFilme. “Through this unique partnership in Brazil we will try and make sure that the right projects being developed in Rio meet the appropriate international partners at the earliest opportunity so that they can help shape these films with international as well as domestic Brazilian market appeal.”

All seven projects and their producers receive guidance and coaching throughout the six-month program from international industry experts selected by the Marché du Film. These already include Sophie Bourdon, the former head of ACE (Ateliers du Cinéma Européen), and producer Marie Pierre Macia, who has experience of working with Brazilian producers.

Prior to Cannes, where they received logistical support, promotion and international visibility, the projects had technical and legal advice in Rio de Janeiro to analyze the commercial and legal aspects of each film. Following on from Cannes, Films from Rio will support the after-market follow-up of negotiations and meetings, and evaluate the results while preparing each of the projects and their producers for RioMarket and Ventana Sur.

To participate in the Films from Rio programme, Rio de Janeiro based production companies had to have projects that had a first treatment script, a structured budget as well as a director attached to the project. The films also had to show that they are of international interest and appeal.
