Mon Roi, the new work by actress and director Maïwenn, debutes today at the Festival. Well-known since adolescence, the French actress made her name starring in works by Luc Besson, The Professional (1994) and The Fifth Element (1997).

Her first foray into directing began in 2006 with the feature-length film Pardonnez-moi, but she became a household name in 2011 with Polissia, a work that won her the Grand Prix at Cannes.

Her new film tells the story of Tony, a woman who, confined to a rehab centre after a serious skiing accident, reflects on her life so far. Between physiotherapy sessions she begins to ponder the complexities of her relationship with George, the love of her life.

Who is this man she loves so much? Why does this passion exist between them? How has she so easily given in to an overwhelming and destructive romance? For Tony, this difficult period of reconstruction – mental and physical – is just beginning, but it might be the key to her future happiness.

First screened at the Cannes festival in 2015, the film won Emmanielle Bercot the prize for best actress. Mon Roi will be on at the Cine Odeon – Centro Cultura Luiz Severiano Ribeiro today at 9.20pm.
