​Few know that Rio de Janeiro used to be an important whaling center in Brazil. For centuries, boats docked here and the captured sea mammals were shredded. Almost every part of the whale was used, especially the oil that fueled the street lamps and was used to build walls. This predatory fishing exterminated wales species that visited the Guanabara Bay.​
