An eight-year-old girl lives alone with her two younger siblings in a large, solitary country house surrounded by a mysterious forest. She finds herself trapped between the imagination and games of childhood, and the reality and responsibilities of adulthood. She struggles silently to look after her younger brother and sister while her parents are inexplicably absent. Inspired in her imagination, she gradually creates a strange world of endless waiting and silent longing based upon the frightening fairy tales she reads aloud.
