​On 16th December 2012, Jyoti went to the cinema to watch The Life of Pi with a friend. On the way back, they got a clandestine bus. The six men on the bus beat up the two friends and raped Jyoti for an hour, while the bus went round the streets of the city. Afterwards, the two victims were thrown from the moving bus. The case became an international controversy, inciting a wave of protests. Jyoti died after undergoing several operations. Drawing on interviews with several people connected to the case, the documentary analyses the brutal culture of rape in India, where the film was banned.​

Leslee Udwin

​Born in Israel in 1957. She produced the comedy East is East (1999), by Damien O’Donnell, for which she won the BAFTA for best British film and was nominated in five other categories. In 2010, she produced the sequel West Is West, by Andy De Emmony. She also produced Who Bombed Birmingham (1990), a TV movie based on a true story, which helped to free six Irish men unjustly imprisoned. This is her first feature as a director.​
