Nasceu em Jackson, Mississippi. É amigo de infância da escritora Kathryn Stockett, que lhe cedeu os direitos de adaptação de seu primeiro romance, A resposta, antes mesmo de ser publicado. O resultado foi o longa Histórias cruzadas (2011), que Taylor dirigiu e escreveu, indicado a quatro Oscar, incluindo melhor filme. Além de diretor e roteirista, é também ator, tendo participado de filmes como Romy e Michele (1997) e Inverno da alma (2010).
