From five terraces of the Algerian capital, five life stories are narrated in the space of one day, from dawn to midnight, ordered by the rhythm of the five calls to prayer coming from the city mosques. In its episodic structure, the film shows different pictures of Algiers, with its endless traffic jams and crowds in the streets. We see families struggling to survive daily life in cramped apartments in the Casbah, Bab El Oued, Belcourt, Notre-Dame d’Afrique and Telemly. Shown at Venice Film Festival 2014.
Merzak Allouache
Nasceu em 1944 em Argel. Formou-se em cinema pelo Instituto Nacional de Cinema em Argel e pelo IDHEC em Paris. No início dos anos 1970, trabalhou como consultor no Ministério da Cultura da Argélia e como assistente de direção do cineasta Slim Riad. Em 1976, dirigiu seu primeiro longa, Omar Gatlato. Seu penúltimo filme, El taaib, ganhou o prêmio Label Europa Cinema no Festival de Cannes 2012.
