The last strong bond in the old Maia family is forged between Afonso da Maia and his grandson Carlos. Trained as a doctor at the University of Coimbra and subsequently educated during a long trip through Europe, Carlos da Maia returns to Lisbon in October 1875. His grandfather is delighted. Over the next 14 months the tragedy and comedy in Carlos's life begins, grows and ends like the tragedy and comedy of Portugal. Based on the novel The Maias, by Eça de Queirós, the melodramatic, fun and melancholic plot points to a dismal future, both for the Maia family and for its homeland.

Dirigiu A mulher que acreditava ser presidente dos EUA (2003), exibido na abertura da Quinzena dos Realizadores do Festival de Cannes. Foi selecionado três vezes para a mostra competitiva de longas do Festival de Veneza: em 1998 com Tráfico, em 2001 com Quem és tu?, e em 2005 com O fatalista.
