Based on a true story, the film tells the story of Joãosinho Trinta, a self-taught artist who leaves São Luís to be a dancer in Rio de Janeiro. He then discovers that his real talent is as a carnival dancer, filling in for Fernando Pamplona in the parade of the Acadêmicos do Salgueiro in 1974. His creations revolutionized the Rio de Janeiro carnival and affirmed Joáosinho Trinta as one of the most innovative Brazilian artists of all time.

Iniciou sua carreira no cinema em 1989. Seu primeiro curta, Uma história de futebol (2001), foi indicado ao Oscar na categoria melhor curta de ficção. Fez especialização em roteiro no BingerLab, em Amsterdam. Em 2011 lançou o documentário A raça síntese de Joãosinho Trinta e Natimorto, seu primeiro longa. Dirigiu ainda a série Psi para a HBO em 2013.
