The villages and sights of the Echigo region, in Japan, lay covered in snow for most of year. For generations this has influenced the daily life of the region’s dwellers, who organize their lives according to the volume and height of the snow. To examine this regions’ daily existence, its adaptation methods and rituals, Ottinger travels to the mythical snow-land in the company of two kabuki artists. Together, they will remake the path described by author Bokushi Suzuki, while bringing to life the characters of Takeo and Mako, protagonists of his Snow Country Tales. Berlin Festival 2011.
