For the first time, LGBT themed films will have their own prize at Festival do Rio, the Felix Award.  A name chosen as "Felix" is happiness in Latin.

The new award, designed by Rodrigo Cardoso, follows the dropping of the traditional and popular Gay World section from the festival programme as Festival do Rio wanted to recognise that films with LGBT themes should not be shut away in a branded closet, but should be spread across the programming of the entire festival.

When the Gay World section was introduced at Festival do Rio, it was one of the few opportunities during the year for Rio audiences to see films that addressed LGBT topics and issues. That happily is no longer the case as more and more LGBT themed films gain commercial releases in Brazil.

It is perhaps appropriate that the Felix Award is introduced just as Daniel Ribeiro's Hojé eu Quero Voltar Sozinho (The Way He Looks) is chosen to represent Brazil at the Academy Awards. The film, which won the Teddy Award and FIPRESCI prize in Berlin, tackles LGBT issues.

43 films have been pre-selected for consideration for this year's first Felix Award and the winner was announced on 6 October at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil at 21.30.
