The last Saturday of Festival do Rio offers audiences a wide range of options for their entertainment and education, including a number of Gala Screenings.

At 18:00 in the Cinemateca do MAM there will be a screening of De Gravata e Unha Vermelha, Miriam Chnaiderman’s film that won best documentary feature at the festival’s first Felix Awards in 2014 (photo). Following the screening the British Council will host a debate that marks the 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK, and will discuss the current civil rights of the LGBTQ community in Brazil. Guests include Sebastiano Riso, Marcia Zanelatto, Jacqueline Gomes, Marcelo Caetano, Gilberto Scofield and Martin Dowle.

Also screening at the Cinemateca do MAM at 21.00 in Classics and Cults is Revezes..., Chagas Ribeiro’s production from 1927 that will be accompanied live by the Orquestra Soundpainting.

First Gala of the day is at 15.30 when director Jason O’Hara will introduce Estado de exceção at Estação NET Rio 3. At the same cinema, producer Lionel Baier will present Barbet Schroeder’s Le vénérable W, part of world Panorama, at 17.40; and producer Cynthia Garcia Calvo will introduce Alexandra Latishev Salazar’s Medea, part of Latin Première, at 19.40.

There are three Galas scheduled for the CCLSR - Cine Odeon NET Claro on Saturday. Director Cande Salles and screenwriter Edna Gomes will introduce João de Deus - O silêncio é uma prece at 17.00. Guest of honour will be the medium and spiritual surgeon, João de Deus (John of God).

At 19.30 directors Rodrigo de Oliveira and Gustavo Ribeiro, along with producer Joelma Oliveira Gonzaga, will introduce the hors concours screening of their documentary Todos os Paulos do mundo, and the subject of the documentary, Brazilian actor Paulo José, will also be present.

At 23.00 there will be the screening of the closing night gala film, Woody Allen’s Wonder Wheel.

Actor Nahuel Perez Biscayart will be on hand for the screening of Robin Campillo’s 120 battements par minute, the French submission for this year’s foreign language Oscar. The film screens at Estação NET Botafogo 1 at 21.00.

Niteroi hosts two Galas on Saturday. At 19.40 at Reserva Cultural Niterói 2 producer André Skaf will present Vicente Amorim’s Motorrad; while at 21.40 director Fellipe Barbosa (photo), a past winner of the festival’s Redentor, will introduce his latest feature, Gabriel e a montanha, at Reserva Cultural Niterói 4.
